The Basics

What is Business Contract Hire?

Business Contract Hire is one of the UK's most popular forms of business vehicle finance. It enables businesses to lease a vehicle over an agreed period — typically between 24 and 60 months — in return for fixed monthly payments.

Rather than purchasing the vehicle outright, your business pays to use it throughout the contract. At the end of the agreement, the vehicle is returned to the finance company — removing any concern about depreciation, resale values or disposal.

BCH is available to Limited Companies, Sole Traders, Partnerships, LLPs, Charities and Public Sector organisations. From a single company car to a nationwide fleet, it provides a straightforward, affordable way to keep your business moving with the latest vehicles.

At the start of every agreement, you choose:

  • Your preferred vehicle — car, van, EV or LCV
  • Contract length of 24 to 60 months
  • Estimated annual mileage allowance
  • Initial rental profile (typically 1–9 months upfront)
  • Whether to include a maintenance package

Once agreed, your monthly payments remain fixed throughout — no surprises, no depreciation exposure, no disposal headaches.

How it Works

A straightforward leasing process from start to finish

From your initial enquiry through to delivery and renewal, VCEA manages the process on your behalf — minimising administration and keeping you informed at every stage.

1

Choose Your Vehicle

Select the vehicle that best suits your business — saloon, SUV, electric car, pick-up or panel van. Our independent status means we compare all major manufacturers, not just one.

2

Set Your Contract Length

Most businesses choose 24 to 48 months. We help determine the most cost-effective option based on your mileage, usage pattern, replacement cycle and budget.

3

Agree Your Annual Mileage

You estimate the miles the vehicle will cover each year. An accurate mileage allowance ensures payments are calculated correctly from the outset and avoids excess mileage charges.

4

Optional Maintenance Package

Add a package covering scheduled servicing, tyres, brakes, MOT testing and breakdown assistance — spreading all running costs into one fixed monthly payment.

5

Finance Approval & Order

Once your quotation is accepted, the finance provider carries out credit assessment. VCEA manages this on your behalf and keeps you updated throughout.

6

Delivery to Your Door

Your vehicle is delivered directly to your premises anywhere in the UK. No dealership visit required. Add it to your insurance and you are ready to go.

7

Fixed Monthly Rentals

Throughout the agreement you benefit from fixed monthly costs with no concern about future resale values — making budgeting significantly easier than vehicle ownership.

8

Return, Replace or Review

At the end of the agreement, the vehicle is returned subject to fair wear and tear. Many businesses immediately begin a new agreement on a replacement vehicle.

Why Leasing?

Why businesses choose Business Contract Hire

BCH has become the preferred vehicle funding method for thousands of UK businesses because it combines flexibility, predictable costs and access to modern vehicles without tying up working capital.

💼

Protect Your Cash Flow

Replace a large capital purchase with manageable monthly rentals. Working capital stays available for recruitment, equipment, marketing and growth — not depreciating in a vehicle.

📅

Predictable Monthly Budgeting

Fixed monthly rentals make financial planning considerably easier. Where maintenance is included, many running costs are also covered — giving complete cost certainty throughout the agreement.

📉

Eliminate Depreciation Risk

The finance company accepts the depreciation risk — not your business. No hassle selling, no exposure to the used vehicle market, no concern about future values at the end of the term.

🚗

Access the Latest Technology

Leasing allows businesses to replace vehicles every two to four years, keeping drivers in vehicles with improved fuel economy, extended EV ranges, enhanced safety and advanced driver assistance.

⚙️

Reduce Administration

VCEA supports you throughout the entire leasing journey — vehicle selection, finance, delivery and renewal planning. For multi-vehicle businesses this significantly reduces the fleet management burden.

📈

Scale as You Grow

Whether you need one company car or a multi-vehicle fleet, Business Contract Hire scales with your business. Add vehicles as you grow without tying up additional capital in depreciating assets.

Compare Your Options

BCH vs the alternatives

Understanding how Business Contract Hire compares with other funding options helps you make the right decision for your business. Our consultants can walk you through any of these in detail.

Business Contract Hire vs Buying Outright

Feature Business Contract Hire Buying Outright

Depreciation RiskFinance companyYour business
Resale ResponsibilityNone — simply returnBusiness must sell the vehicle
Budget CertaintyFully predictable and fixedLess predictable

Business Contract Hire vs Hire Purchase

With Hire Purchase, your business works towards owning the vehicle — monthly payments gradually repay the full value, and ownership transfers at the end. Business Contract Hire is different: you pay for the use of the vehicle, not ownership. At the end of the agreement it is simply returned, eliminating depreciation and disposal concerns. HP may suit businesses that intend to keep vehicles for many years; BCH is preferred by organisations that value regular upgrades and predictable fixed costs.

Business Contract Hire vs Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

PCP agreements include an optional Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) — a final balloon payment that gives the customer the option to purchase, return, part-exchange or refinance. Business Contract Hire has no purchase option within the agreement. The vehicle is simply returned at the end, making it ideal for businesses that want regular access to new vehicles without the complexity of future ownership decisions or residual value exposure.

Tax Considerations

Potential tax advantages of Business Contract Hire

Business Contract Hire can provide meaningful tax advantages for UK businesses, although the exact treatment depends on individual circumstances. We always recommend seeking advice from your accountant or tax adviser before entering any finance agreement.

🧾

VAT Recovery

VAT-registered businesses may reclaim up to 50% of the VAT on qualifying car BCH rentals where there is any private use element. Where the vehicle is exclusively for business use with no private use, 100% VAT reclaim may be available. The VAT on maintenance packages is generally 100% reclaimable. For vans, 100% VAT reclaim is typically available.

🏢

Corporation Tax

Monthly Business Contract Hire rentals may generally be treated as an allowable business expense, subject to current tax legislation and vehicle CO₂ emissions. This can be a more tax-efficient way to fund company vehicles than capitalising a purchase under the Capital Allowances regime. Always seek professional advice.

Electric Vehicles & BiK

Fully electric vehicles attract a Benefit in Kind (BiK) rate of just 3% for the 2025/26 tax year, rising to 4% in 2026/27 and 5% in 2027/28. This significantly reduces the company car tax liability for employees — making EV BCH an attractive option for businesses offering company cars as a benefit.

Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances. Always seek independent professional tax advice before entering into any finance agreement.

Going Electric?

Electric Vehicle Business Contract Hire

Electric vehicles are one of the fastest-growing sectors of the UK leasing market. Business Contract Hire enables companies to access the latest electric cars and vans without the high purchase prices traditionally associated with EV ownership.

Whether you are considering your first electric company car or transitioning an entire fleet to zero emissions, our consultants help identify vehicles that suit your operational requirements, daily mileage and charging infrastructure. Where a fully electric vehicle is not yet practical, we can advise on plug-in hybrids too.

EV BCH advantages

  • 3% BiK rate for 2025/26 — exceptionally low company car tax
  • Lower running costs through home and workplace charging
  • Reduced servicing requirements vs petrol or diesel
  • Access to the latest battery range and charging technology
  • Zero direct exhaust emissions — no Clean Air Zone charges
  • Quieter, more refined driving experience
  • Supports business sustainability and ESG reporting goals

Commercial Vehicles

Business Van Contract Hire

Business Contract Hire is not limited to company cars. Sole traders, SMEs and larger organisations choose BCH for commercial vans because it delivers the same predictable monthly costs and flexibility across the full range of light commercial vehicles.

Questions Answered

Business Contract Hire — frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Business Contract Hire through VCEA — from how it works to VAT, mileage, early termination and EV options.

Business Contract Hire is a leasing agreement that allows businesses to use a vehicle for a fixed period in exchange for fixed monthly rentals. Ownership remains with the finance provider throughout and the vehicle is returned at the end of the agreement. There is no option to purchase. It is the UK's most widely used form of business vehicle finance.
Business Contract Hire is available to Limited Companies, Sole Traders, Partnerships, LLPs, Charities, Public Sector organisations and many other entities, subject to credit approval by the finance provider. VCEA can advise on the most suitable funders for your business type and circumstances.
Most agreements run between 24 and 60 months, with 36 months being the most common choice. The available terms vary depending on the finance provider and vehicle selected. VCEA will recommend the most cost-effective term based on your usage, mileage and budget requirements.
VAT-registered businesses may reclaim up to 50% of the VAT on qualifying car BCH rentals where there is any element of private use. Where the vehicle is exclusively for business use with no private use whatsoever, 100% VAT reclaim may be available. For vans and commercial vehicles, 100% VAT is generally reclaimable. The maintenance element of a package is typically 100% VAT reclaimable. Tax treatment always depends on individual circumstances — speak to your accountant before committing.
Maintenance is optional on most agreements. A maintenance package can cover scheduled servicing, routine maintenance, tyre replacement, MOT testing and breakdown assistance — bundling running costs into one fixed monthly payment alongside the lease rental. VCEA will advise on whether a maintenance package makes financial sense for your circumstances.
The vehicle is returned to the finance company, subject to the agreed annual mileage and BVRLA fair wear and tear guidelines. There are no purchase obligations and no disposal responsibilities. Many businesses immediately begin a new BCH agreement on a replacement vehicle, keeping their drivers in the latest models.
Yes. Many start-up businesses are eligible for Business Contract Hire, although acceptance depends on the finance provider's underwriting criteria. Newer businesses may need to provide additional financial information or a personal guarantee from a director. VCEA can help identify the most suitable funders for start-ups and advise on what documentation may be required.
Yes. Business Contract Hire is available across the full range of fully electric cars and vans and plug-in hybrid vehicles from all major manufacturers. For businesses, EV BCH is particularly attractive given the 3% Benefit in Kind rate for 2025/26, which significantly reduces the company car tax liability for employees using the vehicle privately.
Yes. Your contract includes an agreed annual mileage allowance. Driving more miles than this allowance may result in excess mileage charges at a pence-per-mile rate agreed upfront in the contract. VCEA always aims to set a mileage allowance that accurately reflects your expected usage from the outset, minimising the risk of end-of-contract charges.
Early termination of a BCH agreement is possible but typically results in a financial settlement charge. The amount varies depending on how far through the agreement you are and the specific contract terms. VCEA explains all early termination provisions clearly before you sign any agreement, so there are no surprises.
Vehicle Excise Duty is generally included for at least the first year of registration on most BCH agreements, although this varies by finance provider and contract terms. VCEA will confirm the exact position for your chosen vehicle before you commit.
Some finance providers allow mileage adjustments during the agreement. This may affect the monthly rental amount. Your VCEA consultant can advise on whether an adjustment is possible for your specific agreement and what the financial impact would be.
Absolutely. VCEA supports businesses requiring anything from one company car to a nationwide fleet of 300 or more vehicles. There is no minimum order. Every client receives the same dedicated, personal service regardless of fleet size.
With Hire Purchase, your business gradually repays the full vehicle value and ownership transfers at the end. Business Contract Hire is fundamentally different — you pay for the use of the vehicle and return it at the end, eliminating depreciation exposure and disposal responsibility. BCH typically has lower monthly costs and is the preferred choice for businesses that regularly replace vehicles and value fixed, predictable costs.
