BEV

Battery Electric Vehicle

Runs purely on electricity stored in a battery, with an electric motor and no engine at all. No exhaust, no petrol station visits, and typically a real world range of two hundred to three hundred and fifty miles. This is what most people mean when they simply say electric vehicle.

PHEV

Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Combines a smaller battery with a petrol or diesel engine. Can be charged from the mains for a short electric only range, typically twenty to forty miles, then switches to the engine. A useful bridge for drivers not yet ready to go fully electric.

HEV

Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Cannot be plugged in at all. A small battery is charged automatically through the engine and regenerative braking, offering modest fuel savings over a standard petrol or diesel car without changing how you refuel.

MHEV

Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Uses a small battery and electric motor purely to assist the engine, improving efficiency slightly during acceleration and stopping. The engine remains the primary power source at all times.

How electric vehicle charging actually works

The UK charging network has expanded quickly, with fuel retailers, supermarkets and shopping centres all adding chargers alongside the existing public network. Here is how the different charging speeds and access methods compare.

Up to 7 kW

Home Charging

A wall box installed at home adds roughly thirty miles of range per hour, making an overnight charge enough for most daily driving. The cheapest way to charge.

7 to 22 kW

Workplace or Destination

Common at offices, supermarkets and car parks. Slower than rapid charging but useful for topping up while you shop, work or park for a few hours.

50 to 150 kW

Rapid Charging

Found at motorway services and dedicated charging hubs. Adds around eighty percent charge in roughly thirty minutes, ideal for longer journeys.

150 kW Plus

Ultra Rapid Charging

The fastest public chargers available, capable of adding significant range in as little as fifteen to twenty minutes on a compatible vehicle.

Do you need a charging app. Most public charging networks require an app or a contactless RFID card to start a session and take payment. It is always worth checking beforehand though, since a growing number of rapid chargers now accept contactless bank card payment directly, without needing an app installed at all.

Finding a charger. Independent tools such as Zap-Map and Chargefinder let you locate public chargers by location, connector type and live availability, useful for planning longer trips outside your usual charging routine.

Connector types. Slower home, workplace and destination chargers use a Type 2 connector. Rapid and ultra rapid chargers use a CCS connector for direct current charging. Almost all new electric vehicles sold in the UK support both.

Charging costs vary enormously depending on where and how you charge. Here is a realistic breakdown, along with what range to actually expect.

Are electric vehicles reliable

Yes. Electric vehicles are generally very reliable. A conventional petrol or diesel engine contains hundreds of moving parts including pistons, valves, fuel injectors and a multi speed gearbox, each a potential point of failure. An electric motor has a small fraction of that complexity, typically just one moving part in the drivetrain itself.

Fewer moving parts generally means fewer things to go wrong and lower servicing bills over time. Routine maintenance still matters, covering items such as tyres, brakes, cabin filters and software updates, but the heavy engine servicing associated with combustion vehicles simply is not required.

The Bigger Picture

Environmental impact, honestly explained

Electric vehicles produce no exhaust emissions while driving, which materially improves air quality in towns and cities, particularly around schools and busy junctions. There are no Clean Air Zone charges for electric vehicles in the cities that operate them.

Producing an electric vehicle, and particularly its battery, does create more emissions upfront than producing a petrol or diesel car of the same size. Over the full lifetime of the vehicle, though, most independent studies find electric vehicles produce meaningfully fewer total emissions once driving emissions are accounted for, even using current UK grid electricity.

That advantage continues to grow as the UK electricity grid uses more wind, solar and other renewable generation each year, meaning an electric vehicle bought today becomes cleaner to run, on average, as time goes on.

Electric vehicles currently offer the lowest company car tax available in the United Kingdom. We are currently in the 2026/27 tax year, where the Benefit in Kind rate for fully electric vehicles stands at four percent.
